Walk, Don't run!
One moment of distraction and now I have a cast the size of a ski boot and the weight of a bucket of cement strapped to my leg. I was at Christchurch Airport catching a plane back to Tauranga after a fabulous weekend and slipped and broke my ankle.
Now I am almost a cripple and suffering in ways you wouldn’t believe.
From sleeping to showering, from the simple act of trying to find a ringing cell phone to the complexity of shopping for basic groceries everything is major, MAJOR, frustration.
Small children look at me oddly when I’m in a wheelchair. My colleagues at work try not laugh as I stumble about and I really notice the difference in service that those with a disability attract.
At the bank I was able to sit down and have all the necessary forms brought to me for signing. At a post shop I had to walk to the counter, stand in line and then struggle further just to post a letter. They could have put it into the bin behind the counter surely! (The woman who served me was clearly not a slynkey girl!)
The biggest downer was I had just signed up for coaching to improve my squash game to be more competitive. That will have to wait for a long time now. There goes my chance at a professional sporting career!
But on a positive note my workmates, friends and family have all been great. Thank you so much for your support!!
And before you ask. I was sober, just careless. Ok. And I have "small
bones" - whatever that means.
Let's chat again soon ladies x
