Accesorise, Accesorise, Accesorise!
Three words sum up how to be fashionable on a budget perfectly and they are "accessorise, accessorise, accessorise". If you are feeling the pinch like lots of others during these uncertain economic times, there is no reason for you to look like it! If you can't afford designer gear, just stick with the tried and true tight top and jeans or that little black dress and 'bling it up' with some great jewellery.
The chunkier and louder the jewellery the better this season - especially when it comes to necklaces. Don't be ashamed to show off your lovely arms with a few bangles coloured in all the shades of the rainbow, better still reach into the recesses of your wardrobe and find that chunky bracelet with matching hoop earrings that you wore in the 80's.
It seems the 80's is back with a vengeance but this time, it is not cool to cover yourself from head to toe with migraine-inducing bright colours. Instead opt for a darker outfit with some colourful accessories to top off the look.
But being fashionable doesn't always mean you have to follow the flock, in fact although we are known for our sheep jokes, us kiwis have our own sense of style. You don't have to look far to find some beautiful Kiwiana jewellery, with the reds of the pohutukawa, the blue of the Tui feathers and the green of the trees. There are some truly inspired pieces of jewellery in New Zealand that you can buy at a fraction of the cost of imported jewellery.

A great website that sells ultra hip and fashionable New Zealand jewellery and art is http://www.kiwiartz.co.nz/. Ranging from hip flax weaved bags to beautiful silver, greenstone and paua necklaces. Diva is also a great shop for those of us who like to look hip but are on a budget. A chain store in both Australia and New Zealand, we can't guarantee it will be New Zealand made, however the jewellery looks great and you can find Diva in most Westfield Shopping Centres around the country.
And don't walk past those hidden gems in small shopping centres. There are plenty of local shops especially in small towns where true artisans are just trying to make a living. These are where you can find some really cute accessories to go with your clothes. The Karangahape Road street markets, Howick Village Market on every Saturday and Victoria Park Market are great places to find a local artist and some fantastic accessories if you're in Auckland. You'll be surprised at just how great that moth eaten sweater looks when you team it with something 'absolutely fabulous'.
In trying times where economic growth is unsure, why not put your money where your mouth is and buy Kiwi made? With the added bonus... You'll look great too! (jewellery pictured is from Andrew White and available on kiwiartz.co.nz)
