What you need to know about pilates

What exactly is Pilates?
An innovative system of mind-body exercise evolved from the principles of Joseph Pilates. It is a combination of strength and flexibility training that improves posture, reduces stress and creates long, lean muscles without bulking up.  Pilates can be done on a mat or using equipment.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

  • Improve strength, flexibility and balance
  • Tone and build long, lean muscles without bulk
  • Challenge deep abdominal muscles to support the core and lower back
  • Reduce stress, relieve tension, boost energy through deep stretching
  • Restore postural alignment
  • Improve circulation

What's better, mat or equipment Pilates exercises?
It's not a matter of one being better than another, both strengthen and tone the body. But machines and equipment can add more resistance which can be more challenging. The Arc Barrels and Ladder provide support that allows you to safely manipulate your body to stretch and engage muscles otherwise challenging to isolate. The reformer has springs, ropes, and a gear system  and adjustable resistance. It allows for proper body positioning which basically helps you maintain your body alignment. Smaller Pilates equipment pieces such resistance bands, Pilates circles and exercise balls also provide an element of variety and focus to a Pilates regimen.

How often should I do Pilates?
It is just the same as resistance training, so only doing pilates 2 -3 times a week. And having at least 1 day in between sessions.

Will I lose weight through Pilates exercises?

Pilates is based on sculpting the muscles which helps increase your metabolism and helps loose those extra cms.  But you lose weight more effectively by doing cardiovascular workouts eg jogging, bicycling or swimming and having a healthy eating plan.

Can anyone do Pilates?
Pilates can be done by anyone and anybody shape and style, if previous injuries or if unsure confirm with your doctor.

Getting started
There are heaps of DVD, classes available now, but before you get started I would recommend you attend a beginners class so you can understand the basics and how to engage your powerhouse. Because it is a beginner class doesn't mean it will be easy it just means you are starting out just like any other exercise program.
