Photographs & Makeup
Hi Ladies, my name is Marianne, and I’m one of the newest contributors for slynkey.com. I am a completely self-taught makeup artist who is very passionate about anything beauty! From makeup, to skincare, and even hair & nail care, I’ve gathered a fair amount of knowledge in my book purely as a hobby.
I am very honoured to be here on slynkey, I will do my best to share tips and tricks on makeup and beauty, as well as doing some products review on products that have really impressed and helped me.
Today I will share a little on photographs + makeup.
School ball season is coming up and a lot of you must be stressing over the final details for the big day, for instance, your makeup! Whether you’ve decided to get your makeup done professionally or are doing this yourself, here are some basic tips you can keep with you that can will always come in handy.
A primer serves the purpose of making your makeup last longer as well as making the application smoother and easier. Because you will have a long night that is mostly spent on the dance floor (I imagine), a primer will come in very helpful to help your face makeup last longer. There are a lot of primers on the market, but generally they are all pore minimizing and oil control.
Secondly, stay away from face makeup that contains high SPF if you will be taking a lot of photographs with a flash. SPF is very common in foundation/primers nowadays for the reason that sun protection is much more needed these days. While they are great for that very reason, foundations/primers with high SPF tend to reflect light. What you will get as a result of this is a ghastly white face, which is sometimes accompanied by what is called a ‘halo’ affect.
If you will be using eye shadows for your night look (which I imagine you will be ☺ ), it is important to understand what the different finishes of eye shadows do in photographs. Put it in simple words, eye shadows that are ‘pearly’, ‘shimmery’ and ‘glittery’, tend to be the colours that reflect light, rather than showing the colour; while colours that are ‘matte’ or ‘solid’ are the colours that will help you build intensity. Therefore, if you want the eye shadow colour to show up well, always build the intensity with a matte colour.
Lastly, is to bring pressed powder with you on a night out. You may have naturally oily skin, or combination skin with a oily t-zone, or even normal skin, but after heaps of dancing, chances are your skin will get a little shiny, especially around the on your T-Zone - That is your forehead, your nose and your chin. Bringing a compact with you for touch ups not only ensures that you will keep looking picture perfect, but also will help the makeup last longer as the makeup will not slide around as easily.
So there's my basic tips for the ball - Or any big night out. If you have any questions, please post them below and I will try my best to help. Also, if you have a request on what you'd like to know for the next time, please comment below.
Have a great week ladies. :)

That SPF in foundations tip is a goodie - For years I had that 'white' look in photos and couldn't work out why until someone told me that - It really fixes it if you use products with no SPF girls!
