Date Night

Okay, I’ll admit, it’s probably not a movie I would normally choose, because at the outset it looked like another template slapstick comedy with a couple of good one-liners and the same Hollywood ending.

I was wrong, and it’s not often I’m happy about being wrong! I took a friend to watch Date Night and I left with the same feeling you get when you dig out an old pair of jeans and find $50 in the pocket.

The movie was an unexpected delight, and I’ve since been recommending it to everyone I know! Steve Carrell and Tina Fey star as Phil and Claire Foster, average parents with an average marriage, who work average jobs and have an average routine.

Things have started to feel a little stale for the Fosters, and when two of their married friends separate to break the boring moulds they find themselves in, it forces the Fosters to wonder where the spice in their relationship has got to. (I can already hear so many of you saying ‘I know the feeling!’).

So the Fosters organise a babysitter (Leighton Meester of Gossip Girl fame), get glammed up and head out one night to one of Manhattans most popular restaurants. Sure enough, they can’t get a table, so decide to ‘live on the edge’ and steal someone else’s booking. That ‘someone else’ they soon find, is actually in a lot of trouble with some dangerous people, and now the Fosters have placed themselves right in the middle of it...

What follows is the most hilarious and unpredictable adventure as Phil and Claire try to get to the bottom of the situation, all the while dodging two crooked cops and encountering a host of interesting characters along the way.

Ladies, go and watch this movie, if for no other reason than to see Mark Wahlberg in all his shirtless glory... Seeing him on screen was like spending that $50 you found in your jeans on a full-body massage – pure pleasure!

An awesome romantic comedy, without all the cliche’s of rom-coms, and definitely double the laughs. Tina Fey is a diamond in this movie – who knew she was this funny? – and Steve Carrell proves he can be hilarious without pulling faces or playing weird characters. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen, DVD wouldn’t quite be the same. And the guys will love it as well!

This is perfect for partners, (especially if you have kids) but is just as good if you’re a singleton like me. Loved it for what it was – lighthearted entertainment - definitely an 8/10.
