Soi
Not too far from home, I have come across a local Japanese gem - Soi Restaurant.
Soi is a warm retreat after baring the cold winds outside. The space is small but cosy - Bamboo lines the windows, shutting out the busy road outside. It's usually pretty busy so the space becomes a buzz of happy diners. But with the lights dimmed, it makes for a perfect romantic diner date destination.
Owner and chef Mr Toru is very present and helps make the experience. Having worked at various Japanese restaurants over 10 years, he knows his stuff. He even has his own special suppliers for seafood and beef, whilst the udon noodles and tofu are handmade on the premises.
As well as the usual sake, and japanese beers, there are some great French and New Zealand wines available.
I had the juicy grain fed angus beef steak. My fellow dining companion, Stuart, even gave the teriyaki chicken the honor of being the "best I've ever had", and he has had many a teriyaki chicken!

For desert, the green tea and black sesame ice creams are a delicious way to end the meal.
The service here is outstanding. I get the feeling you could ask for the most ridiculous thing and the staff would do their best to accommodate you.
They also do takeaways so you can enjoy Soi's delicious cuisine in your pjs on the couch - always a bonus!
Soi will not fail to please even the most scrupulous slynkey diner. With fine attention to detail, amazing service and great food, the experience won't be one easily forgotten.
